3 Exercises Every Woman Should Do
|
Staying healthy is so important if we want to be able to be good parents, progress in our careers or make any sort of difference in the world.
And it becomes even more important the older we get. Research has shown that people who live longer tend to be more active throughout their lives.
There are 3 general types of exercise that everyone should do regularly:
1) Cardiovascular Exercise – this type of exercise is also sometimes called aerobic exercise – and is a necessity to keep your heart healthy and strong.
Some easy ways to get this type of exercise are walking and running – activities that involve getting your large muscles moving more and your heart working harder. Personally, I like using a treadmill for this. I usually tape most shows on TV that I like and then watch them while walking on the treadmill. This way I’m not wasting time just watching TV and as I really don’t enjoy exercising, it distracts me from it enough that the time goes by faster.
By the way, cardiovascular exercise helps by strengthening your heart so that it contracts more strongly and can pump more blood with each heart beat. This way your heart doesn’t have to beat as many times per minute.
2) Strength Training – this type of exercise is important to help us build and maintain our strength, especially as we get older because muscle mass is lost as we age. It can also help keep our bones strong and reduce our chances of developing osteoporosis.
To do this type of exercise you can go to a gym, if you enjoy doing that. They will have many different types of equipment there for you to use. I don’t, so I exercise at home using free weights or exercise bands and tubes.
It works by making tiny, microscopic tears in your muscle fibers – which is why you feel sore sometimes after exercising. When these tears heal, they make your muscle stronger and bigger. (These tears shouldn’t be confused with big tears, which are injuries.)
3) Flexibility Exercise – and stretching helps to keep your muscles from getting injured and can increase your range of motion.
There are many different stretching exercises you can do – if you do a search on a search engine you will find many to choose from.
I’ve been wanting to learn tai chi for years but haven’t found anyone near by enough to teach it. It is good for flexibility and for developing better balance.
Honestly, I don’t enjoy exercising!
So do I do what I say everyone else should do? Not really. I don’t really like exercising very much. Some people seem to really enjoy it but I don’t. Overall my motivation to do it comes from wanting to be more healthy and to live longer. Sometimes that is not enough to get me to do it though. I do use our treadmill a few times a week, it’s easier for me to get myself to do it since like I said above – I can watch TV while I’m doing it! So I’m ok with cardiovascular exercise, but the rest I haven’t done for a while.
Do you enjoy exercising? Why or why not? How do you keep yourself motivated? Any tips to make it more enjoyable for people like me?

If life hands you a tree make tree-ade
|
If life hands you a tree make tree-ade – or so they say. Actually they say ‘if life hands you lemons, make lemonade’. But you have to work with what you got.
Of course the point of the saying is that when something seemingly bad happens, you should try to find some way to make good use of it.
And that is true, many times things don’t turn out the way we wanted but in the end we find something in the situation that isn’t so bad. If fact sometimes we end up with something better than the thing we originally wanted.
Like in Office Space when the one guy backs out of his driveway, gets hit by a car and is severely injured and ends up getting a bunch of money from it and becomes rich.
Certainly my career hasn’t turned out the way I had planned or had wanted it to. On the other hand, now I’m able to work from home and will, hopefully, someday be able to be a work at home mom and spend more time with my child than I would have been able to otherwise. And, if I work real hard and run into a bit of luck I may even be able to make more money than I would have if things had worked out differently.
However, in our case – today we were handed a tree on top of our shed and vegetable garden:
The only tree-ade I can see with this is that I hadn’t written a post up yet for today – then the tree fell – and it gave me something to write a quick post about without a lot of effort.
So see – there’s always a bright side to everything!
Want to see more pictures?
Here is the shed from the front:
Here is a picture showing the vegetable garden covered with tree:
From the back:
The back from the other side:
A couple other pictures:
And for those interested, our neighbor Bob had part of a dead tree fall on fence a couple weeks ago. Lots of tree-ade in this neighborhood lately.
So remember – when things don’t turn out how you wanted – look for ways to make tree-ade lemonade out of it!

Book Review: ‘Overcoming UnderEarning’ Part 11
|
I just finished reading and reviewing a book by Barbara Stanny called ‘Overcoming UnderEarning’! I learned a lot from it and I hope you found my reviews helpful also! A guide to the whole set of reviews is here.
The last chapter was called ‘Putting it all Together’ and focussed on one particular person’s story.
What I’m going to do with this post is review my reviews of the other chapters and highlight my favorite parts – as well as the parts that I want to keep in mind best I can to help my own situation:
“replace a bake-sale mentality with a grander vision”
one common trait of underearners is “a high tolerance for low pay”
“the key to upping your earnings is rarely working longer hours …”
“high earners ‘think’ differently which results in different choices and outcomes. And some of the inner voices that tend to hold us back like “you do not have what it takes”.
“The Most Important Financial Advice You’ll Ever Get”. And the answer is:
You’ve got to be willing to be uncomfortable.
“underearning can no longer be an option, keep your commitments, don’t let yourself get derailed, do what you dread.
“… if you don’t do what you say you are going to, it chips away at your self-esteem
“Not one of us will ever make more money until we explicitly decide that’s what we want to do. I saw this with every six-figure woman I spoke to.”
“you’re willing to walk through fire to make it happen.”
“Making a decision means slamming shut all the doors to other options, blocking off the exits, and, no matter what happens, keep moving toward your destination because anything else is unacceptable.”
“You need to be stubborn about the results you’re going for, but very flexible on how you get there.”
“Resistance emerges as soon as you enter the Discomfort Zone, the space between where you are now and where you want to be”. Barbara then lists 12 signs of being in resistance. I won’t list them all here, just the ones that stood out to me:
- You’re scared into inaction
– You fog up, space out
– You feel paralyzed
– You find reason not to act
“Whenever you decide to do something different … the desired result always lies just beyond reach, in the Discomfort Zone.”
“Your biggest barrier is fear.”
“There’s no escaping the Discomfort Zone.”
“From this day forward, find ways to stretch on a regular basis.”
“Create Community
4 kinds of supporters: True Believers, Confidantes, Way Showers (role models) and Messengers1) Realize no one will do this for me, but I don’t have to do it alone.
2) Reach out, ask for support.
3) Hang out with the kind of people you want to be, not who you’ve been.
you need to shift your mindset from whatever it is now to that of a wealth builder.
“Think big. Act small. And never, ever stop until you attain your goal, no matter what.”
5 steps:
1) Tell the truth about what’s not working, and what is.
2) Make a firm decision about what you truly want.
3) Look for opportunities to stretch by doing what you think you can’t do.
4) Surround yourself with a supportive community.
5) Respect and appreciate money by taking good care of it.
Throughout the book Barbara had inspirational quotes here and there – these were my favorite ones:
“Thoughts become words. Words become actions. Actions become habits. Habits become character. Character becomes destiny.”
— unknown
“Life is not about finding yourself.
Life is about creating yourself.”– George Bernard Shaw
“The truth is the only safe ground to stand on.”
“The question I ask every day is the same it’s always been. How much further can I stretch to reach my fullest potential.”
— Oprah Winfrey
“If you grow your money so you have more than you need, that’s wealth. If you use your money to make a difference, that’s power.”

I missed it!
|
I can’t believe I missed that this past weekend was the 160th anniversary of the first (US) women’s rights convention at Seneca Falls! I’ve been behind in reading feeds or I would have seen it at Zuska’s blog: Happy Anniversary, Seneca Falls!
It still took 72 years from that conference before women had the right to vote. Sometimes its hard to put that into perspective isn’t it? To not be allowed to vote just because you are female.
And did you know that most of the organizers of that convention were Quakers?
A long time ago (seems like ages ago) I wrote up something for Women’s History Month about some of these women including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony and Lucretia Mott. For some reason Elizabeth Cady Stanton has always been my favorite of the women who fought for equal rights.
I wrote it in part for people to use to teach kids about women’s issues (know any homeschoolers who might be interested?) and it also includes some fun activities like a word search, crossword puzzle and more (questions, Match-The-Quotes, and unscramble words) – all about women’s rights and printer friendly.
