Inspiring, Daring, Educating, Achieving and Succeeding!
|
Recently I’ve spent some time thinking about what this blog (and whole site) is about – what I would like to accomplish with it.
After quite a bit of soul-searching I’ve come to the realization of just how much I’m bothered by the fact that women are still underrepresented in politics, science and many other fields. I would like to do what I can to help change that. Examining my domain name more closely I decided that I would like to create an environment – a community – where women can Inspire, Dare and Educate each other to Achieve and Succeed.
When more women around the world are in positions of power we will be better able to make sure there is more equality in housing, health care, nutrition, education, etc. – and not just for women, for everyone on the planet.
I hope to someday add more blogs to this site too – blogs about topics that Inspire, Dare and Educate women to Achieve and Succeed. Some ideas are:
Ideas for Health: – We need to take care of our health so that we will have more energy and strength to be able to make a difference in the world. We need to learn about health and how to be healthy – based on real evidence based science – not on fear, fads or fantasy.
Ideas for Parenting: – Women are still the primary caregivers to children around the world and we have so much influence on the adults they will become that we need to learn all we can to be the best parents we can be.
Ideas for Money: Women still tend to make less money than men and have more financial problems if they are widowed or a single parent. If we can learn how to better manage the money we have we’ll be in a better position to change what we see around us.
Ideas for Change: This blog would educate and encourage involvement in global issues, like the environment, women’s issues and politics.
Ideas for Careers and Business: This would give information about developing a new career or tips for a business.
Ideas to Inspire and Dare: An inspirational blog.
Ideas for Fun : Hey, we need to relax and have fun too!
When I’ll be able to add more blogs, I don’t know. But meanwhile I hope to have some guest posters writing about various topics that Inspire, Dare or Educate women to Achieve and Succeed!
Have any ideas to suggest for a guest post?

George Carlin on pro-life
|
George Carlin died yesterday at 71. I went and did a search for him at YouTube and found the following:
“… [when some of these] other cardinals and bishops have experienced their first pregnancies and their first labor pains and they’ve raised a couple children on minimum wage then I’ll be glad to hear what they have to say about abortion.”

Time to revisit the working and walking thing
|
Over the past year or so my back has been hurting me now and then. It seems to be at least somewhat related to sitting in one place and working on the computer. And – when I was at Disney World last December and spent almost all my waking hours walking and hardly any sitting – my back didn’t hurt once the whole time there!
I had heard it mentioned somewhere about people working and walking on a treadmill at the same time and started thinking about it more after Disney. I thought about having my husband build something, but it seemed like a lot of work. Instead I got a good mat to stand on and put my laptop on a box and tried standing while working. That was ok, for a while.
Then I got a new laptop and a wireless router so I started working on my couch – because I could! And because in the past it seemed like this couch was better on my back. But now even here it sometimes hurts.
Anyway – over at Healthbolt Liz had a great post about this same topic: Is it a Computer? Is it a Treadmill?. But I never did follow up with it. Then – Brandie at The Home Office Organizer posted about Standing Desks: A Smart, Healthy Option. There’s even a social network at Ning called Office Walkers!
So I figure – I need to work on this again – as I’m sitting here typing on my favorite couch and my back is killing me!
Maybe I could spend part of my day sitting, part standing and part walking!
The treadmill desks all seem to be either too expensive, or they won’t work with the treadmill I have. So the route I will have to go – will be a build-your-own, except it won’t be me doing it, I’ll have to see when my husband might have the time. Various different designs can be used. I want one where my computer would be safer, not just on a desk that lays on top of the treadmill railings. I’m thinking the table type would be best, kind of like this one:
Except I wouldn’t want the monitor up that high like that. I’d just want my laptop on a lower shelf, and our treadmill is long enough so it should work ok.
So what do you think? Do you think you would use something like this?

Blogger Appreciation Day
|
As I’m getting ready to relaunch my blog in a few days I can’t help but think about all the bloggers that have inspired and encouraged me. Many of them intimidate me at times though too – because I can’t imagine how I could write as well as or as consistently as they do. But I keep trying. Since Darren has declared today to be Blogger Appreciation Day I thought this would be a great chance to link out to all these bloggers and say ‘Thanks!‘:
Darren Rowse of Problogger
Hsien-Hsien Lei of Eye on DNA
Wendy Piersall of eMoms at Home
Liz Strauss of Successful Blog
Ruth of Eating Fabulous
(and some other blogs)
Kendra James of A Hearty Life
Elizabeth of GenBetween
Tara C. Smith of Aetiology
Dr. Val of Dr. Val and The Voice of Reason
Rachel Walden of Women’s Health News
Kristen King of Lively Women
Elisa Camahort of HealthyConcerns and BlogHer
Heather at HealthBee
Liz and Liberty at Healthbolt
Elaine at Genetics and Health
Reason at Fight Aging
http://www.buildingmyempire.com/
and many others who my mind can’t recall at this moment:
Thanks!

My relaunch plan
|
My plan is to relaunch on April 17. Hopefully I will be able to do that. Last week was just a terrible week so I am way behind with the stuff I wanted to get done before then. This is what happened:
- our 4 month old hot water heater went out – various time consuming, useless phone calls were made. washing up in sink, no hair shampooing.
– husband got tooth pulled – roots fused to bone, etc., painful
– discovered cats had tapeworms – just had them 2 months, had to be there when we got them, learned what dried tapeworm segments look like when accumulated on chair in living room
– cat bit husband when trying to get to vet
– plumber shows up to replace part on hot water heater sent to us
– smell gas in the house – call plumber back
– parts don’t fit right, can’t be fixed
– call new plumber to get new brand of hot water heater installed
– get new one in
– same day – find puddle of water in kitchen floor – call plumber again
– take husband to urgent care for cat bite – got antibiotics
– plumber says its the dishwasher causing the water leak
– buy new dishwasher
– get refund for hot water heater (getting the refund for the labor wasn’t easy)
Three days in a row with a plumber at the house! We now have the new dishwasher and it will (hopefully) be installed tomorrow.
Needless to say I didn’t get much done last week. How do you all find time to blog with this kind of stuff going on?
Before I relaunch I need to upgrade my wordpress, get some plugins, get a feedburner feed, get my Thunderbird account working right (any suggestions?), among other things. I swear I’ll do it even if it kills me and I become another statistic!
Oh, and one word of advice – don’t buy a Whirlpool gas hot water heater!
