Barack Obama wins Democratic Party presidential nomination!
|
Barack Obama is now the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee!
Some highlights from his speech:
“But what you don’t deserve is another election that’s governed by fear, and innuendo, and division. What you won’t hear from this campaign – or this party – is the kind of politics that uses religion as a wedge and patriotism as a bludgeon.”
“I face this challenge with profound humility and knowledge of my own limitations.”

Are women naturally more trusting and less aggressive?
|
Oxytocin is a neurotransmitter and hormone. Many of you are probably familiar with it as it stimulates milk flow in breast feeding women and a synthetic version of it is sometimes used to induce labor. It is also released when hugging, touching and having an orgasm.
But did you know it was also involved with whether or not you trust a stranger?
Some amount of trust is necessary for a complex society to function. A long time ago, people lived in small groups where everyone knew each other. But now most of us are surrounded by strangers everyday. If we don’t have a least some trust in the people we interact with it would be difficult to accomplish anything.
In fact, in recent research by Paul Zak it was found that countries with higher levels of trust tend to be wealthier than those with lower levels of trust.
Additional research by Zak showed that when men feel distrusted they release more dihydrotestosterone (a derivative of testosterone). When men have higher levels of this hormone they tend to display more aggressive behaviors.
Women did not show this same response to being distrusted.
What do you think? Only more research will tell us for certain how much of our ability to trust each other is related to levels of oxytocin or other hormones. Meanwhile do you think that women seem to be less aggressive than men?
Read more about Paul Zak’s research at Scientific American: The Neurobiology of Trust. To learn more about oxytocin I recommend Susan Kuchinskas blog, Hug the Monkey and Wikipedia.

Nipple Cream Warning
I’m sure you’ve all heard this by now but it doesn’t hurt to repeat it just in case – The U.S. FDA is “warning consumers not to use or purchase Mommy’s Bliss Nipple Cream because the product contains potentially harmful ingredients that may cause respiratory distress or vomiting and diarrhea in infants“.
Osteoporosis
Some new research suggests that “sedentary high school girls are at significant risk for future osteoporosis“.
A new study shows that there is a difference in the standard of care for women at risk of osteoporosis in different parts of the world.
Pregnancy and Newborns
Preeclampsia (pregnancy-induced hypertension) is a problem in nearly 8% of pregnancies every year. To be published in Hypertension in Pregnancy is evidence that “stretching exercises may be more effective at reducing the risk of preeclampsia than walking is for pregnant women who have already experienced the condition“.
Two new risk factors for SIDS: overheating of newborns – “increased ambient temperature such as over-wrapping a baby at night time or increasing the room temperature can affect the baby’s pattern of breathing” and smoking – “prenatal cigarette smoke exposure compounds the risk by increasing the likelihood of gasp-like respiration and prolonging the time that it takes for neonates to return to normal breathing following hypoxia“.
Menopause
Due to the lack of estrogens and other hormones post-menopausal women are at higher risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. “A study carried out at the University of Granada on more than 500 postmenopausal patients … concludes recommending the use of the hormone therapy, if necessary, for at least five years, under periodic medical controls“.
