Interview with Liz Strauss
|
Today’s interview is with Liz Strauss! Her main blog is Successful Blog.
1) What do you think are the biggest challenges for women around the world today?
I have trouble speaking for a world of women. I can only speak to what I know and what I see. As a world, we don’t value each other nearly enough. In some parts of the world this means that women aren’t considered attractive unless they are young. In parts, it means that a woman’s work is undervalued hard labor. In some parts women are considered less than men.
The saddest challenge I see, though, is the women who have so much who look at other women as competition.
2) If more women were in positions of power do you think the world would be different than it is now? If so, in what way?
If different men were in power wouldn’t that also be true?
I’m sure that world would be different if more women ran businesses and countries, but I’m not sure it would be better. I think it would be just tilted in another way. I’ve managed and worked for both men and women and the challenges are different but neither is without political and human games. The best teams have both men and women because we balance each other.
I’m not sure that there aren’t more women in power than we know.
3) How does your blog help to Inspire, Dare or Educate women to Achieve and Succeed?
Head, heart, and meaning. I talk about having all three — because we need to know who we are and live the life that is our own. I don’t know that I inspire dare or educate them, but I’m sure on a quest to inspire, dare and educate me.
4) If little girls are made of sugar, spice and everything nice – what do you think adult women are made of?
Adult women are made of a rainbow of ideas and potential. They are the caring hands and heart that move the world to be strong.

12 Things You Can Do To Set a Healthy Example for Your Kids
|
Our kids learn their behaviors by watching us. We can’t expect them to do something that we tell them to do but don’t do ourselves. Likewise if we are doing things we shouldn’t be – we shouldn’t be surprised if they pick up those same bad habits! What kinds of healthy examples – both physical and mental – can you set for your kids? Here are some I came up with – please add any more you can think of in the comments:
1) Don’t smoke – Smoking is one of the worst things you can do to your health. If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do already smoke – stop, you don’t want your kids picking up this bad habit.
2) Drink in moderation – If you drink alcohol, do it in moderation. Show them that it is possible to drink responsibly. Let someone else drive if you’ve drank too much.
3) Limit TV viewing – Try not to spend long hours sedentary and watching TV. Not only does it set a bad example of not living a more active life – but it also sends a message a being more passive in life by watching others do things on TV rather than actually doing things themselves.
4) No fast food – Don’t take them to fast food restaurants and don’t eat fast food yourself.
5) Prepare healthy meals – Cook foods for yourself and your kids with all food groups and especially vegetables.
6) Healthy snacks – Eat only healthy snacks like fruit and don’t even keep junk food around.
7) Exercise regularly – Create a regular exercise routine for yourself. Even if it is something simple like taking a walk every evening – make it a priority so they can see how important exercise is.
8 ) Keep balance – Try your best to keep a balance between your work and your family. This is important for your mental health. You don’t want to set an example of either working all the time or the opposite of not doing something constructive with your life.
9) Have regular health checkups – See your doctor, dentist and eye doctor at the recommended intervals.
10) Express your thoughts – Its not good for your mental health to hold things in or expressing them inappropriately – set a good example by talking out issues with your spouse or other adults in a rational and calm manner.
11) Get enough sleep – Sleep is important to stay healthy, set an example by getting the proper amount of sleep as much as possible.
12) Respect yourself – Show through example that you have good self-esteem – do some nice things for yourself sometimes or arrange for some ‘me’ time. Basically something to show that you are important too – kids need this to help develop their own healthy sense of self-esteem.
What else can you think of to add to this list? Please add it in the comments! Let’s see if we can make a good comprehensive list here to help each other out as parents!

Review: High Heels to Hormones: A Woman’s Guide to Spine Care
|
I recently won a book about women’s back health from Healthbolt! I was really happy to win a copy of it because for the past couple of years I’ve started to have some back problems and would like to learn more about it.
The book is titled “High Heels to Hormones: A Woman’s Guide to Spine Care” and was written by Christina Lasich.
The book was divided up into roughly 5 sections – an introduction, the cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbar spine and a concluding section.
In the introductory section of the book she made the point that many women did not learn how to lift, bend, twist or reach properly when younger and are therefore more “susceptible to spine pain because they entered the work force without any type of physical conditioning”.
I’d have to admit that I’m in that group – we never learned anything in school about exercising or in general, moving properly.
Additionally, she discussed the importance of eating healthy and avoiding smoking – both of which influence all aspects of health.
Concerning cervical spine health, she discussed issues of breasts and bras and gave some tips to making sure your bra fits and supports you properly. I stopped wearing bras years ago – and am damn happy I did! I’m small enough that I don’t really need one anyway and always hated wearing them.
She also explained the importance of proper posture in the part about the thoracic spine as well as osteoporosis prevention.
As far as I’ve been able to tell my back problems are all due to posture issues. At one point I started having problems with one of my arms getting numb which seems to be from having my shoulders rounded forward too much. Then I had problems with the back of my head and neck getting numb. That was solved by making sure my monitor was high enough. You should be looking straight forward when looking at your computer for long periods of time (like I have been). My laptop monitor was too low so my head was constantly bent down. Raising it made a huge difference! Lately I’ve had problems lower down on my back, I think because I still haven’t been sitting properly most of the time and need to start doing back and other strength training exercises again. Anyway – enough of me!
Lower back pain is very common and Christina goes over a number of exercises and other things you can do to help prevent it. She mentions also how high heels can cause back pain – a topic that I plan to discuss on my blog in a lot more detail in the future.
Over all I’d say its a good book and I recommend it especially if you are a busy person without a lot of time to read. The book is pretty short and straight to the point with tips and exercises to teach you how to keep your spine healthier.

Happy Friday!
Hello! I’m feeling much better this week and have lots of good links to share!
I found these two from a blogger I’ve just recently met:
10 Ways to find more time for reading – remember reading is important and a good example to set for your kids if you have them!
Somaly Mam – This is the web site of The Somaly Mam Foundation which is a nonprofit public charity working to end human trafficking. It is named after Somaly Mam who was “sold into a life of sexual slavery” and “was forced to work in a brothel with many other young girls”.
Environment
National Wildlife Federation reports that the Bush Administration Launching Sneak Attack on Endangered Species Act.
Health
Kristen King brings up an important problem for many college students – many don’t have health insurance or are under insured: Student Health Insurance
Methamphetamine is becoming a bigger problem all the time – Dr. Val interview the creator of an anti-meth program: Kansas and Australia Team Up To Fight Methamphetamine (Meth) Abuse.
Healthbolt had another great blog carnival (which I missed submitting anything to again!).
Work and Business
Tammy Lenski shared some tips on Conflict at work: How to know when to let it go?
Denise Wakeman discussed Organizing Your Business Education.
Quick Links
Anita Bruzzese wrote about how is it important to never give up if you want to be successful in Got Grit?
Elizabeth at GenBetween wrote about Sandwich Generation dilemmas.
I found a couple new blogs recently that I’d like to share with you: Women’s Voices for Change and Lip-Sticking – marketing to women online.
Just for Fun!
‘Separated by a common language’ is a blog I’ve been reading for a while now – it has nothing to do with mine, but I find it interesting. A recent post lists some of the different names that are used for vegetables by Americans and the British: the big list of vegetables – for example what we call eggplant in the US, the British call ‘aubergine’!
Have a great weekend!
