2 Reasons Why Women Should Vote for Obama
|
There are many different issues and reasons why a person might vote for one candidate over the other in an election. A fundamental concern for all people is whether the candidates in question have respect for you, a citizen, or even consider you to be a real person with rights equal to their own. One of those most basic rights is the right to be able to control what happens to you – your body – rather than the president, other politicians or anyone else making those decisions for you.
As women one of the things that we should expect to be able to have control over – if we are really considered real human beings capable of making choices for ourselves – is the ability to control how many children we have.
Consequently, I see two indisputable reasons why the only sensible choice for women is to vote for Obama:
1) Obama recognizes that women are real humans beings with the right to control what happens to their own body:
“I am pro-choice, I believe in Roe v. Wade, and I come to that conclusion not because I am pro-abortion, but because ultimately I don’t think women make these decisions casually. They struggle with these decisions profoundly.”
Obama also supports the right of women to have reasonable access to birth control:
– Barack Obama authored legislation to fix the birth control pricing crisis facing millions of low‐income women and students across the country.
– Barack Obama has voted in favor of funding teen‐pregnancy prevention programs.
– Barack Obama was an original co‐sponsor of the Prevention First Act, a package of proposals that increases funds for family‐planning services, makes sure that health insurance plans cover birth control if they cover other prescription medication, and improves women’s ability to get emergency contraception.

Obama is a member of the Democratic Party, which made the following statement on reproductive rights:
The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to choose a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay, and we oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right.
The Democratic Party also strongly supports access to affordable family planning services and comprehensive age-appropriate sex education which empowers people to make informed choices and live healthy lives. We also recognize that such health care and education help reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and thereby also reduce the need for abortions.
The Democratic Party also strongly supports a woman’s decision to have a child by ensuring access to and availability of programs for pre- and post-natal health care, parenting skills, income support, and caring adoption programs. (source1, source2)
2) McCain doesn’t think women are real human beings and consequently believes women should not be allowed to have control over their own bodies.
1. McCain voted in favor of four anti-choice U.S. Supreme Court nominees: Alito, Roberts, Thomas, and Bork.
2. McCain voted in favor of six anti-choice lower-court nominees.
3. McCain voted against a resolution in support of Roe v. Wade and a woman’s constitutional right to safe and legal abortion services.
4. McCain has repeatedly voted for (and cosponsored) the Federal Abortion Ban, a law that criminalizes some abortion services, with no exception to protect a woman’s health, and carries up to a two-year prison sentence for doctors.
5. McCain said, “If I am fortunate enough to be elected as the next President of the United States, I pledge to you to be a loyal and unswerving friend of the right to life movement.”
6. McCain has never cosponsored or supported legislation that would prevent unintended pregnancy or reduce the need for abortion. (source)
McCain does not support the rights of women to have reasonable access to birth control:
- Has voted against birth control 22 times.
– Voted to terminate the Title X family planning program, which provides millions of women with birth control.
– Voted against funding teen-pregnancy prevention programs.
– Voted against requiring insurance companies that cover drugs like Viagra to also cover birth control.

Still need more convincing? Don’t let McCain play games with birth control:

Obama 2008 !!
If for no other reason, you should know that McCain is not an advocate of women’s rights, or even has respect for women, when you consider his most famous quote: “At least I don’t plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c*^t.”
He wasn’t even very apologetic of it in the press, saying that he was ‘tired’… what will be his point of view 6 months into the most stressfull and rigorous job in the country?

Another great post, Trisha.
While I firmly believe that women should have control over their bodies and access to birth control, I do have an issue with the pro-choice label. In most instances there is no choice as we do not currently have universal childcare, preschool, health insurance, and maternity leave. I believe that if our country really was “pro-family” that there would be fewer abortions. It is not an experience that a woman takes lightly or wants to have but in so many cases there is no other choice because we have so few programs that support the needs of women and the family.
Here’s a video of McCain being asked why insurance companies cover Viagra and not birth control. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2y8dYwq01g

All voters need to be aware of the issues and where the two candidates stand on them. Women in particular have a lot at stake this election. Thanks for bringing a few of those issues to light.

Why the “Lipstick on a pig” quote is important
By now everyone has heard Obama’s “lipstick on a pig” quote. Those who are for McCain and Palin have chimed in that it is obviously a sexist remark made about Palin. Those in the Obama camp point out that he has used the phrase before and that even McCain has used the phrase. So who is right and who is wrong? Let’s look a bit deeper.
It is absolutely correct that both Obama and McCain have used this relatively common phrase before. McCain admits he has used the term numerous times. Obama used it to describe Bush having given General Patraeus an impossible mission. I don’t think anyone is in disagreement that it is an often used phrase in Washington.
So what is all the hubbub about? In law you can help prove a crime or criminal mindset by showing a propensity to do that crime over and over. If I go out and get drunk on the town, I may or may not be an alcoholic. If I go out and get drunk on the town repeatedly, I probably am an alcoholic. The underlying question then is whether or not Obama is sexist. While some people have said that his “lipstick on a pig” comment is not worthy of much attention, it certainly could not be said that his being sexist is not worthy of attention. So is Obama sexist or not?
Having researched the topic, there is no doubt in my mind that he is. Not wishing to make such a broad statement without proof, I submit to you that Obama has a history of making sexist statements which can only lead me to believe, he is a sexist.
Indeed Geraldine Ferraro, a Democrat that has the honor of being the first female Vice President nominee called Obama sexist. She has since thrown her support behind him, picking party over gender now that Hillary is not an option. But let us look to Hillary herself who continually alleged that Obama and his starstruck media was sexist.
Then you have the numerous little jabs that Obama has taken at women. If you come to the conclusion that Obama is not sexist, then surely you cannot say he is not chauvinistic. While in Allentown Mr. Obama said to a woman at the Tama Manufacturing plant that “you look like you might be a dancer. “You’re big time. You are gorgeous.” Then while in Scranton Obama tried to convince a Hillary supporter to change allegiance by suggesting “I’ll give you a kiss.” At an address at Tulane University Obama stated, “You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out” when referring to attacks aimed at him by Clinton. Finally, when asked a question by a female autoworker, Obama said “hold on sweetie” avoiding the question so he could go pose for a photo shoot.
While none of these jabs in and of themselves constitute blatant sexism, when viewed in light of the totality of the evidence, they show a pattern. This coupled with the fact that Sarah Palin had already taken personal possession of the lipstick comments with her “lipstick on a pitbull” comment makes Obama’s use of the phrase very questionable. In fact, right after making the comment, Obama began to talk about Sarah Palin. This leads to the conclusion that either Barack Obama is a reckless unintelligent person who does not have a good mastery of the English language, which is not the case. Or, he is sexist. You have the information, you decide. One way or the other, the “lipstick on a pig” comment is more important than some are letting on.

If you don’t have money to raise a baby…DON’T HAVE SEX! Woman need to be responsible, and stop killing babies because you can’t keep your legs closed.

First, I just want to say that I appreciate your passion regarding this election and that you have decided to do something to effect change in this country. I wish more Americans had the same passion and drive that you displayed in your blog, even though I disagree with what you said and how you said it. I disagree with your comment that Sen. McCain does not regard women as human beings. Sen. McCain may differ with your feelings about abortion but that does not mean he does not regard women as human beings. Keep sharing why women should choose Obama, but please try to stick to facts that people can take as unbiased and based on thought and insight.
Always Faithful,
Nathan

I guess I don’t see it that way at all. If it’s disrespectful to a woman to be pro-life, then you could as easily say it’s disrespectful to babies and adults (grown up babies) to be pro-choice. Womean may want the right to have abortion so that if a lady makes a mistake she can just wipe it all away. However, I think the baby deserves more rights then the generally selfish and self seeking mother. Sure maybe less that 5% of babies are a result of rape, that is no excuse to be letting all other women who just made a bad call to be getting rid of their babies. Do you know what the word for fetus means in Greek? Offspring, so mothers are killing their unborn offspring. Is that a right to be given or taking a way? I really don’t think so. It is not a woman’s right issue to commit murder of an unborn baby, it is a moral issue. I’m sure plenty of woomen disagree with me, but then again, I just want to let you know that plenty of women disagree with you.

“and stop killing babies because you can’t keep your legs closed.”

I see this is a bit of an old post but I got a bit fired up about the birth control issue. I am on birth control and started on it because I had horrible periods and had a really bad cyst that landed me in the hospital for 3 days almost having to get a hystorectomy because of it. Not everyone that is on birth control is on it for BIRTH CONTROL. There are MANY other medical reasons that a woman could be taking it, not just for sex. Thanks.
