Buying swimming suits and the economy
|
Today was the day for my once a year mall trip. I rarely go to a mall for anything, but once a year I have my eyes checked at a lens crafters in a mall.
Last time I was there I noticed there were quite a few stores vacant – this time it was much worse! I was tempted to count because at first glance it seemed like maybe only half the stores were actually open. My short term memory is really bad though so I didn’t try. I know what it would have been – maybe a third way through the mall I’d lose count and have to walk all the way back to the other end and start over. And that would have happened at least 3 or 4 times. I would have got quite a bit of exercise in though.
Bad sign of the state of the economy when that many stores are closed. A few looked like they were just closed for the day – and are probably open on evenings and weekends. But many were just vacant. In general, very few people at the mall at all too. Now, it was daytime on a weekday but it shouldn’t be that bad. Even considering that I think they are trying to reduce the number of teenagers hanging out at the mall there still should have been more people.
And I bought a swimming suit today! I know this is pathetic, but its been at least 20 years since I’ve bought one! I think its pretty cool the way the 2 piece suits are sold separately now. And the bottom parts have options of shorts like things and ones that are sort of like skirts. This time of year I didn’t have many options – but everything was reduced in price which was nice.
Most of the ones I liked the best weren’t in my size. But I found one that was not too bad. It was the shorts type. Black mostly, with some blue in it. I thought afterward that maybe a light colored one would have been better – dark might just make me look even more pale.
I’m skinny but I’m having a hard time feeling comfortable walking around in public in a swimming suit anymore. Maybe I’m getting old. It feels like walking around in underpants and a bra. My legs are skinny and flabby at the same time. I need to work on that! At least with the bottom part like shorts I don’t have to feel so self conscious about my pubic hair showing. I hate that. And the top part I got covers me up quite a bit too. And I also bought a cover up thing to wear over it all.
Hopefully I won’t look too ridiculous wearing it.
And what did buying a swimming suit have to do with the economy? Nothing at all, just thought I’d mention it.
So – I hesitate to ask for fear of looking like a fool if no one answers – is there anyone else out there who worries about the same swim suit things as me? Or worries about their pubic hair showing? Or hasn’t bought a swimming suit in like a million years and is amazed by the short and skirt bottom styles?
I guess I need to get out more often.

Hi Trisha,
I can totally relate to this post. I won’t even wear a bathing suit anymore – I’m not overweight and I’m not thin but I really don’t feel comfortable in them – it is like wearing underwear. When I swim, it’s usually at a lake so I just wear a tank top and shorts. My daughter wants/needs to take swimming lessons so I’m probably going to have to buy one soon – ugh.
I did know that they sell the tops and bottoms separately – I’ve seen that in catalogs. And it’s about time – I always needed a bigger size on top than on bottom. One time when I was a teenager my Dad actually switched the tops before we bought it so I had a bathing suit that fit me.
I can’t stand malls so part of me is glad that the shops were closed and there weren’t many people there but since our society is based on consumerism it doesn’t bode well for the economy.
I liked you adding a personal touch to the post – it gives it individuality.

I don’t wear bathing suits anymore. Basically, I’m a high skin cancer risk and I don’t enjoy walking around in “underwear and a bra” in front of complete strangers. I’ll wear shorts or a sarong and a tank… I look better in a nice dress anyway, and that way I can be sure people are looking at my face instead of my chest. I’m married and don’t want to attract unwanted attention either… Call me a fuddy duddy. No more bathing suits for me.

It makes me feel better to know I’m not alone! I hope I don’t chicken out of actually wearing mine in public now!
When I was a kid my parents had a pool and I guess since the only people who were there and therefore saw me in a swimming suit were people I knew it never bothered me. But the thought of going to a public pool or beach in a swimming suit is kind of intimidating.

Hi Trish,
I can relate to this! Last year my partner and I went to the Great Barrier Reef for a holiday. I found a bathing suit that was really nice and I felt as comfortable as I could. I found myself constantly wrapping a towel around myself whenever I left the water.
I think it’s quite normal for people to become more self conscious as they age. It’s unfortunate because we should be really proud of our shape
Regarding the pubic hair question. That’s a whole new topic! Wax, shave..yeesh! I just hate it!
Thanks for a great post

I don’t go to malls and prefer to avoid them completely. For women it is awesome that two piece bathing suits are sold separately. As women our bodies are different from top to bottom so we need this. I know for me I need different sizes in the two piece. In fact, this is a good reminder to order some new bottoms for my two piece since my body has changed over the past two years since I have had this suit. But it has changed in a very healthy and balanced way!

How often do you yourself swim and what stroke or do you just write about it?
Can I ask though – how did you get this picked up and into google news?
Very impressive that this blog is syndicated through Google and is it something that is just up to Google or you actively created?
Obviously this is a popular blog with great data so well done on your seo success..
Swimming greats you should write about next, my ex was an olympic swimmer!

Pubic hair? What’s that? Mine has vanished of late, like the hair under my arms.
Not that I was ever a hairy woman, but the little that I once had is now to be found around my chin.
P.S. Tie on a pretty sarong

Congratulations on upgrading your swimsuit. Do you have any pictures to share of the new swimsuit? How is it working out for you so far?
