|
I missed adding this in my Friday Favorites:
Sarah from the National Women’s Law Center sent me an email about the series of posts for National Women’s Health Week that they wrote. Lots of good information there!

Happy Friday!
Learn about gene therapy!
I’m sure you’ve heard of gene therapy- but maybe don’t understand it that well? Scientific American has a nice article explaining it: “How does gene therapy work?“. Its written in plain English and isn’t too long so its a great opportunity to learn about it.
Depression
At b5media it was the Health & Wellness Channel’s monthly theme day and this month was about depression. Many of the bloggers there wrote some nice posts about depression. Here are a few:
Question and Answer session with a long-time sufferer
Breast Cancer Can Cause Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
In Honor Of Mental Health Awareness: Are You REALLY Happy?
Heart Disease And Depression/Anxiety: It Is Directly Related.

Labor Pain Relief
At Our Bodies, Our Blog they an Expanded Discussion of Nitrous Oxide for Labor Pain Relief. This isn’t a topic I know much about. Actually, I knew nothing about it, but the discussion seemed very educational to me.
Fibromyalgia
Cynthia Armistead was interviewed by ABC News about Fibromyalgia!
Challenging us to think differently
“Rather than accepting aging as an inevitable aspect of life, they are instead encouraging society to view aging as a disease—something to be treated. This is a profound paradigm shift, but is it any more profound than Copernicus telling people 500 years ago that they were not at the center of the universe? History has a way of demonstrating that the future often turns out much different than most people appreciate and that what constitutes “conventional wisdom” in one era is laughed at and mocked by future generations. Our “acceptance” of death might be one such issue.” from 10 Reasons You Will Live to 1000.
Have a great weekend!

What not to do – if you want a long, healthy life
|
I decided that for National Women’s Health Week I wanted to focus on things you can do to prevent illness and stay healthy. Earlier I talked about exercising and eating healthy foods. Today I want to write about the things you shouldn’t do if you want to stay healthy.
An obvious one, and one that I’ve talked about here a number of times – is not smoking. Its extremely addictive, really bad for pregnant women and young children, can lead to heart disease, emphysema, stroke and cataracts, causes 87 percent of lung cancer deaths and harms nearly every organ of the body. And that’s just the start of the Health Consequences of Smoking.
Smoking is probably one of the worst things you can do if you want a long and healthy life.
Another thing to avoid is too much alcohol. And increasingly alcoholism is becoming a bigger problem for women. New research by Richard A. Grucza, of Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri shows that “for women born after World War II, there are lower levels of abstaining from alcohol and higher levels of alcohol dependence“. Further: “the gender gap between women and men in the prevalence of alcohol dependence is narrowing”.
And of course alcohol and pregnancy and breast feeding do not go well together!
So the message for National Women’s Health Week this year: exercise regularly, eat right and avoid risky behaviors like smoking and excess drinking.

WOMAN Challenge Day 4 and 5
|
Both yesterday and today I forgot to put my pedometer on! But – I walked on a treadmill for 40 minutes both days. I think that counts for something!
I forget it because if I leave it in an obvious place for me to find it in the morning, then it is in a place that the cats will most likely find it at too. And I doubt at that point that it will be functional.
I’ll have to leave it somewhere else – I might miss a few steps with it though.

Overcoming Underearning: Book Review Part 2
|
In chapter two Barbara tells us that one common trait of underearners is “a high tolerance for low pay“. Now I wouldn’t say I’m ‘tolerating’ low pay – but maybe I am. I don’t like it, but I haven’t changed the situation.
Even though I’m sure I am an underearner she also says that “Even if you’re not a bona fide underearner, the principles in this book will definitely help you get ahead“.
She then lists 10 traits of underearners. I’m not going to list them all here but I will list the two that I think especially apply to me:
Underearners underestimate their worth – I’m pretty sure I do this
Underearners are self-saboteurs – “procrastinate, take on too much, become scattered and distracted” – I know I do this!
She goes on to say that while there are sometimes things that happen that are beyond our control, most of the 10 traits mentioned are things we can control. She also spoke a bit about empowerment.
My favorite quote from this chapter:
“Work your fingers to the bone, what do you get? Boney fingers. Boney fingers.”
— Hoyt Axton
