Soda in schools to end!
|
Last week major soft drink companies like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo Inc. aggreed to stop selling soda in schools! They came to this decision through encouragement from ‘The Alliance for a Healthier Generation’. ‘The Alliance for a Healthier Generation’ is a joint venture of The American Heart Association and the Clinton Foundation and was formed in 2005.
The goal of The Alliance is to reduce childhood obesity. Their four main targets are Industry, Schools, Healthcare Professionals and Children.
The new guidelines are as follows:
Elementary schools – 8 oz servings only to be sold – only unsweetened juice, low or non fat milk and water.
Middle schools – 10 oz size drinks will be allowed, otherwise the same as Elementary schools.
High schools – 12 oz sizes will be allowed. In addition to the unsweetened juice, low and non fat milk and water, they will also sell diet sodas, unsweetened tea, low calorie sports drinks, flavoured water and seltzers.
This is a great step in the right direction! Of course kids may still be drinking stuff with too much sugar at home, but this at least reduces the amount they will get. Plus, schools really should be setting a better example of healthier eating.
For more information see the Clinton Foundation web site and the The Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

Save the Internet before its too late!

This post doesn’t have anything to do with women’s health – but it is important to for all web sites and blogs – and anyone who uses the internet.
Basically, large telecommunications companies want to have control over the internet. They could do things like only let some web sites load fast and make others load slowly. It would be really bad.
It’s late and I’m not thinking clearly enough to articulate the issue well – please visit the Save the Internet site to learn more. Here is the link to their FAQ page – they do a much better job than me explaining the issue!

No more Disney toys from McDonald’s?
|
Disney is not planning to renew its deal with McDonald’s that allows the fast food restaurant to give away toys with disney characters in its Happy Meals.
For the past 10 years Disney has promoted its movies through McDonald’s with plastic toys for kids. Their contract will
end later this year after the promotions for the movies ‘Cars’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’ have finished.
McDonald’s will still sell its food in the Disney theme parks however, and may still have some promotions with McDonald’s.
McDonald’s will also now be able to promote the movies of other studios in its restaurants too.
Disney’s decision is believed by many to be due to its concern about damaging its image of being family friendly. In recent years more and more reports keep being published about how children are becoming obese. Other reports however claim that it was a mutual decision.
So what do you think? Good for kids or not? I say it is, but I have to admit I like all those little plastic toys! But non-disney toys would be fine with me too! Its best for the kids though – they don’t need any more encouragement to eat junk food!
